Key strategies for helping your child at home
Observe, wait, listen!
Spend time watching your child and thinking about how they are communicating with you. It’s not just speech you’re looking for: How do they let you know they are frustrated? How do they show you what they like?
Repeat back what they say to confirm you’ve understood.
This helps you check that you’ve understood and gives the child feedback about what they said. It also gives them a good model of clear speech and will help them develop the clarity of their speech.
Add to what your child says
After you repeat what your child says, add one or two words to help them expand their language.
